DEGREE DAYS-- How Your Fuel Gets Delivered
A Degree Day is a unit of temperature. By calculating the Degree Days, and keeping track of the results, Francis Fuels is able to calculate when it is time to deliver oil to your home.
This is how it works:
Each day during the heating season, Francis Fuels calculates the average outside temperature and subtracts it from 18°C (65°F), the temperature at which the average heating system will come on to maintain the warmth in your house.
If today's high temperature is 15°C and the low is 11°C, the average is 13°C. Subtract from 18°C, this leaves 5°C or 5 Degree Days.
By keeping track of Degree Days, and the buildings K-Factor, Francis Fuels knows when you need more fuel because Francis Fuels knows exactly, how many Degree Days the heating fuel in your tank will keep you warm and comfortable in your size of home.
(A K-Factor is simply a number for showing how fast a building uses fuel. Once the K-Factor is established for a given customer, it is multiplied by the usable litres of fuel in the customer's tank to find how many degree days can elapse between fuel deliveries)
The accuracy of automatic fuel delivery depends on a concise calculation of your fuel use in relation to the weather. If you supplement your oil heat with another heat such as a wood stove, or turn your thermostat down while you are on a vacation, Francis Fuels will adjust to your lower oil consumption. When you return, or when you stop using the other heat source, your oil consumption rate increases.
It is very important to notify Francis Fuels of your return and/or the change of your supplemental heat, to ensure accurate and efficient delivery of your heating oil.
